Low Field Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (LFMS) uses much lesser magnetic field as compared to traditional rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) therapy and is a non-invasive technique of neuro-stimulation cerebral cortex by generating a magnetic field through multiple coils placed on the various parts of head region. This technique has been applied to an increased area of electrical activity in the auditory area of the brain (auditory cortex). The passage of electric current very fast along the coil is capable of creating an electromagnetic field which passes through the skull without resistance.
LFMS has been used so far mainly in the treatment of certain serious depressions, but some recent studies have indicated that a single session of TMS had effects on pain.
Using Low field transcranial magnetic stimulation shows promise over time for the treatment of certain chronic intractable pain sessions. This non-invasive technique is devoid of significant adverse effects, but it is still in research. It should eventually have some chronic pain patients to have access to a new way to relieve their pain.
Researchers review some of the medical studies on the efficacy of low field transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression and neurological disorders.
Low field transcranial magnetic simulation or LFMS is a kind of brain simulation therapy. In LFMS therapy magnetic pulses are used in place of electricity to activate the parts of the brain. It was derived from rTMS therapy which has been developed in 1985 and has been studied as the most path-breaking therapy for clinical depression. This can also be applied for various neurological and psychological disorders like the Parkinson's syndrome, Meniere's disease, anxiety disorder, stroke and the Dystonia.
LFMS is the best treatment for patients suffering from depression and is one of the greatest boons in the field of psychiatry. It may also be used for OCD, migraine and chronic pains. The LFMS treatment is non-invasive, painless and it does not require hospitalization because it has no side effects. It can be said that it is one of the novel and patient friendly mode of treatment with positive results.
In this treatment, the LFMS device works on LFMS therapy and creates a magnetic field comprising of several magnetic pulses which passes through skull or cranium of the brain. No surgery or electrical current is needed in this kind of treatment. It is the magnetic field which is the basis for therapeutic change within the brain cells.
The LFMS devices or machines allow a trained professional to use an electromagnet to non-invasively inhibit or stimulate a part or an area of the brain. The LFMS aims those places in the brain within few millimeters and this wipes off the side effects of a non-relevant treatment like the Electric Shock therapy (ECT).
Presently, the LFMS system is seen as a potential treatment for Neurological & Psychiatric disorders. Some of the psychiatric disorders include Schizophrenia Obsessive, Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Mania, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Phobias, Panic Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Eating Disorder & Addictions. The LFMS therapy for depression has been quite effective and an extremely safe alternative. It is less expensive in India than other parts of the world.
The efficacy of LFMS in the treatment of depression has been well established because it is useful in the treatment of resistant depression and is regarded as a first line treatment modality. The results have shown that it is better than antidepressants. When it is administered together with medication it provides relief from the symptoms and recovery is anticipated faster. Overall it is regarded as a life saver while treated of depression.
